6 Signs It’s Time to Take a Break From Instagram as a Homemaker

Maybe it’s a hunch. Maybe you feel the Lord calling you to spend your time elsewhere. Here are 6 sure-fire signs it’s time to take a break from Instagram.

You Are Anxious

For a lot of us, Instagram has become somewhat of a secondary news source. While this is of course your right and you ought to use Instagram in a way that benefits you most, following tons of accounts that are constantly posting about the news can be exhausting to scroll through.

If you find yourself filled with anxiety over the state of the world, you might want to take a little break from constantly inundating yourself with bad news. You could even snooze/unfollow those accounts and commit to only intentionally reading the news. We like The Pour Over newsletter to stay updated on the basics!

You Are Lazy

Is the laundry piled up? How is your to-do list looking? Instagram can very easily be used as a sneaky tool of distraction from your work at home. If you have a lot to do, it might be time to take an Instagram break so you can knock out your lengthy list! Another indicator is if you feel like you never have time to do things you love like reading, sewing, or working out.

You Are Feeling Discontent

I have to constantly remind myself that everyone has complete control over how we perceive their lives based on what they post on Instagram. It’s like a reality TV show…everything is somewhat staged, even when people are being “real and raw”!

When you stop scrolling and look back into your own life, are you feeling discontent? Take a break and gain some perspective. Choose gratitude for the life, husband, and children God gave YOU! Furthermore, while discontentment should always be combated with repentance and gratitude — you can also use it as a tool. Discontentment can teach us what we want. Be grateful for what you have, while working towards what you want.

You Aren’t Making Time For The Word

So you don’t have a few minutes to read scripture but you do have a few minutes to scroll your feed? Yikes. Get those priorities straight! A lot of these issues (discontentment, anxiety) also stem from not being in The Word. If you need a reading plan, we like this one or this one. Both also have coordinating podcasts!

You Aren’t Seeking Real Connection

Don’t get me wrong — I adore our Instagram community! It is such a treat to connect with like-minded women every single day. But. Do not substitute your Instagram community for a real, in-person community! You need a church! A good church family will benefit you far greater than your Instagram friends can. They are the ones who will bring you food during hard times. They are the ones who will ‘do life’ with you!

You Feel the Need to Justify Your Time Spent Scrolling

When I feel the need to justify something I’m doing, it’s usually a red flag. A good thing simply doesn’t need to be justified. I don’t need to justify reading a book, cooking dinner, or playing with my children. If you justify your time on Instagram by saying, “I’m building a business” or “I’m connecting with other women”…it’s possible you are spending too much time on the app.
